Ordering and Delivery / Ordering

Answer

Absolutely. You can easily assemble your own Roetz online with our configurator and order the bike straight away.

Answer

At the Roetz Fair Factory in Amsterdam-North we build all our unique, handmade bikes and e-bikes. We have a showroom here as well, where you can see, try and order our different bikes.

When you come and visit us, you can get a tour at our factory and meet the makers at the same time!

Answer

Every bike is unique and will be compiled with care and attention according to your own preferences. As we use existing frames, we depend on the availability of frames.

You can find the current delivery times of the Originals bicycles via https://roetz-bikes.com/collection

If you are interested in Branded Bikes, please contact us via Info@roetz-bikes.nl, because the delivery times for Branded Bikes depend strongly on the colour and the number of bikes.

Answer

The best way to experience a Roetz for yourself is to make a test ride. To do so, you're welcome in our Roetz Fair Factory in Amsterdam-North. Just book a test drive easily through our website. A little tour in our factory is included as well!

You can also visit our local dealers for a test ride.
Here
you find a complete list of our dealers.

Answer

Yes you can! In the Netherlands and several other countries there's a number of cycle shops that sell and represent our bikes. You can go there for advice, maintenance and service. An overview of our current dealers can be found here.

Answer

With our branded bike configurator you can easily assemble your own Roetz for your company or organization. When you order 10 bikes or more, it's possible to choose each RAL colour you prefer. Branded bikes can optionally be delivered including a smart lock, maintenance and insurance, both in a buy or lease construction. For more info visit our website.

Answer

Each Roetz is unique! Because you can assemble our models in so many different ways and because we manufacture our bikes locally in our own factory, we build each Roetz on request. Therefore we hardly have any bikes in stock.

However, you can also take a look at our outlet collection page. Now and then we do have some models available for direct delivery.

Answer

Yes sure! We happily take in your old bike and ensure all parts get a good destination. If your bike has a steel frame that's still intact and fits in our design line, we build an original Roetz with it.

We offer you a € 50,- discount on your new Roetz bike or e-bike when you hand in your current bike at our Fair Factory in Amsterdam.

Do you want to order your new bike online? Please send us an e-mail to info@roetz-bikes.nl saying 'I want to trade in my bike'. We will send you a code you can use online and you can turn over your bike when you pick up your new Roetz.

Do you want to order your bike at our factory? Then we will arrange this during your visit.

Please note: We cannot turn your old bike into your own new Roetz. Our production process is too complex for this.

But it's great to know maybe one day there'll be a Roetz riding somewhere, that's built with your donated frame!

Answer

By maintaining your bicycle properly, you can extend its lifespan and enjoy a better riding experience!

We recommend having your first service performed 10 to 12 weeks after receiving your new bicycle. A local dealer or bicycle mechanic will know what to inspect during this initial service.

In addition, annual maintenance is important to keep your bicycle in good condition. For this, you can also visit a dealer or bicycle mechanic in your area.

You can also read our blog post about bicycle maintenance (including tasks you can do yourself!).

Answer

It's best to treat a leather Brooks saddle with Brooks Proofide leather fat. It makes the leather supple and more comfortable. It also offers protection against weather influences. Apply this leather fat mainly at the bottom of the saddle and use a small amount for the upper part only. Rub it out well with a soft cloth to prevent staining.

Grease the saddle regularly in the first few weeks and from then on every 9 months.

A wet saddle can cause stains in clothing. Wet leather can also start sagging and damaging the saddle. Therefore it's better to protect the saddle with a cover when leaving the bike outside. When the saddle still gets dirty or wet, clean it with a cloth and treat the saddle with Brooks Proofide.

The correct leather tension ensures that the saddle stays in shape and retains its comfort. To strengthen the leather deck, turn the bolt in the saddle nose up to 90 degrees at a time and check the tension. Be careful, don't strain too much or too often. As soon as you've reached the end of the nose bolt, you can't strain the saddle any further.

Answer

A Brooks Cambium saddle is made from volcanic rubber with an organic cotton top layer. The saddle is highly weather-resistant and requires little maintenance.

Answer

For cleaning and maintaining the chain and the gear wheels you can use some lukewarm water and a brush.

First remove the worst dirt with an old cloth. You can also get a special chain cleaning set.

It's important to grease the chain immediately after cleaning. For this, Roetz uses Cyclon Law Lube chain oil, which is suitable for wet weather conditions. Drip a little oil on the whole chain and let it move in for a few minutes.

After that, take off the remaining oil with a cloth.

Answer

The right tyre pressure for a city and touring bike is around 4.0 bar. The maximum pressure is indicated on the tyre.

A high pressure ensures less rolling resistance and better protection against a flat tyre.

A lower pressure offers more comfort and more grip on the road.

Maintenance / Assembling

Answer

A Portugese cork grip can be mounted onto the handlebar with a pu wood adhesive fiber glue.

To do so you keep the grip in oblique position and apply the glue while slowly turning the grip. After this you gently screw the grip onto the handlebar, so that the glue distributes well. The vibrant glue starts to fizz a bit and hardens, which results in a fixed connection.

The recommended drying time is 24 hours.

Answer

With the right adjustments you can avoid back, knee or neck complaints. You can raise or lower the bicycle saddle and slide it forwards or backwards across the rails. Besides, you can fix the saddle horizontally or with the point slightly up or down. With the right height your legs will still be a little curved when the peddle is fully down. You should also be able to reach the ground when standing still.

To determine the height of the handlebar you sit down on the saddle and swing your hands forwards. You should have a slight kink in the elbow while you can hold the handles properly and sit upright. At a city bike you usually choose a more upright position whereas at a sporty seat or bike you tend to lean forward. Use the bolt on top of the handlebar to change the height. With the bolt underneath the handlebar you change its horizonal position.

Used tools are a hook wrench 6 and a ratchet wrench or hex 13.

Answer

We usually deliver the bikes fully assembled to your doorstep. All you have to do is to adjust the saddle and the handlebar.

With international deliveries in a box, there are some tiny bits you have to fix for yourself. To help you we made some handy videos!

Also check out our tips for adjusting your handlebar and saddle.

Answer

Absolutely, you can assemble both a front and rear child seat on a Roetz.

You can buy a seat on our website or in our showroom. For a rear child seat we offer a heavy duty rear carrier with a capacity of 35kg. The Thule Yepp Maxi seat can be adjusted on the frame with the adapter.

The range of a Roetz e-bike depends on the type of support, terrain and way of cycling.

1. No assist | you cycle without support

2. Eco 25-45 km | when you provide more power yourself or keep the same speed over a longer distance, 40-45 km is possible. In urban areas (with lots of accelerating and braking) 30-35 km is more common

3. Turbo custom 20-45 km | depending on how you configure this setting

4. Turbo 20-30 km | when you provide more power yourself or keep the same speed over a longer distance, 30 km is possible. In urban areas (with lots of accelerating and braking) 20 km is more common

The battery is regenerative, by backpedaling and herewith slightly braking, it charges itself.

Properly inflated tyres will also help increase the range.

Without support you can still ride quite comfortably on a Roetz e-bike.

Answer

Batteries contain parts that are harmful to the environment. It's important to collect old batteries carefully and keep them apart from regular household waste. For this reason they carry a special waste label.

If you want to replace the battery you can go to our dealers or the Roetz Fair Factory for a battery swap. Roetz ensures your old battery is processed correctly, free of charge.

About our regular bikes / Sustainable and unique

Answer

We could reverse this question: why should we use new frames when over one million Dutch bicycles are thrown away each year?

Most people see broken bikes in them and thus waste. We see useful materials for our design bikes and are happy to give these materials a second chance!

Roetz uses the solid steel frames of orphan bikes, collected by various Dutch municipalities. We dismantle the entire bike in loose parts, so that we can easily recycle all components. We remove the original coating of the frames and front forks and check them carefully. Only those that fully meet our quality requirements get a new, three layered powder coating. After that they start their new life!

Bear in mind a Roetz is a new bike. We are convinced our recycled steel frames will last longer than most other new bikes, often with aluminum frames. That's also why we offer a 5 year guarantee on our frames!

Answer

First of all we reuse frames of existing bikes, so that every bike is a one-of-a-kind with its unique details. For example, you can discover stamps or ornaments from the original brand. Or find a typical form, such as the French or Dutch classic bicycle style. This also means that your frame may differ a little from the images you see online.

Secondly, you are the designer of your own Roetz! You can assemble your bike as you like, so it really becomes your bike. Discover all possibilities in our online configurator and create your own unique Roetz!

Answer

We work hard to improve our positive impact on the planet and people. Here are some sustainable choices we stand for:

. Reuse of steel frames and front forks (more than 30% of a bicycle)

. Recycling all parts of used bikes and packaging materials we don't use

. Applying sustainable components such as wood and cork

. Give a second life to discarded materials, such as dress guards made from conveyor belts

. Co-operate with suppliers from the Netherlands and neighbouring countries. This ensures less transport and lower CO2 emissions

. Use of high quality parts, such as tyres, brakes and saddles

. Offer employment to people with limited opportunities in the labor market and encourage them to discover and use their talents

. Remanufacturing of existing bike fleets, such as the public transport bikes of the Dutch Railways, with 70% reused materials

So, when you ride a sustainable Roetz you truly contribute to a more healthy planet!

About our regular bikes / Components

Answer

We guarantee a capacity of 15 kg front and back. The wheels have extra thick stainless steel spokes to ensure they can handle your transports.

You can also get an extra heavy rear carrier, with a maximum load capacity of 35 kg.

Check out our online store for more details and ordering.

Answer

Our wooden fenders give your bike the typical Roetz look. They are specially made for us by a German supplier and consist of ash wood with a protective coating. Unlike aluminum fenders the wooden mudguards don't rust. Scratches are also less visible due to the flexible material.

The wooden mudguards will last for many years by cleaning them every now and then with lukewarm water and then treating them with some special wood oil. Together with the manufacturer we developed a premium oil ourselves. It comes in a small tin and you can obtain the oil by sending us a mail.

Answer

A Roetz is equipped with 1-speed (no gears), 3-speed or 7-speed:

. A 1-speed bike has one fixed stage position and a coaster brake.

. A 3-speed bike has three gears and a coaster brake.

. A 7-speed bike has seven gears and front and rear hand brakes (Shimano rollerbrakes).

For the 3-speed and 7-speed we use the Shimano Nexus acceleration system that is user-friendly and reliable. The 3-speed has a clickbox on the right racing end. With the 7-speed a gear hub is mounted in the rear wheel.

General / Warranty

Answer

At Roetz we fully trust our bikes and e-bikes. Hence we give 5 year warranty on the steel frame.

We offer 2 year warranty on the engine and 1 year on the battery, or 1000 charging cycles.

Bike parts and the lacquer have 1 year warranty.

After a product is being repaired or replaced under warranty, the warranty period doesn't start over again. The receive date of the bike is the benchmark for the warranty period.

On our site
you can read about our warranty and conditions in more detail.

General / Theft and loss

Answer

The frame number of your bike is unique and makes it traceable. So always note this and keep it in a safe place.

With this number you can report the police when your bike has been stolen or went missing. You find the frame number at the bottom of the frame, near the bracket of the crack axle.

Because of possible theft, we advise you to insure your bike properly.

We have our insurance partner ENRA, specialists in bike insurance. For more information and registration (in Dutch only), visit their webpage.

Answer

For insurance in the Netherlands, we would like to refer you to ENRA or ANWB. Both are solid, good insurers for your bicycle.

Batteries are sensitive to extreme temperatures. They function best at a temperature between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. It is therefore best to store the battery at room temperature and only place it on the e-bike when you set off.

Here we give 6 tips for using the battery in cold weather. The tips for removing the battery from the bicycle only apply to bicycles equipped with the Pendix system.

1. Charge level and temperature

If winter driving is too cold for you, it is best to store the battery at a temperature between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius and keep the charge level between 50 and 80%.

2. Take it easy

At low temperatures, it makes sense to downshift a gear. Select a lower gear with a correspondingly higher cadence. A cadence of 70 to 80 revolutions (rpm) is ideal for this. Frequent starting and stopping requires more energy. Therefore, try to pedal as evenly as possible. This optimizes the range of the e-bike battery.

3. Different support levels

An e-bike has different support levels. The higher settings in particular are best used in winter. Due to the stronger pedal assistance of the motor, the absorbed current heats the battery. And we also get warmer when we move more in cold weather.

4. E-bike maintenance in winter

A well-lubricated chain and the correct tire pressure ensure that the battery has to supply less energy. Tire pressure that is too low causes more friction on a firm surface, which leads to a loss of speed. More energy is then required to reach the desired speed. Do a winter check in the fall or make an appointment at the dealer.

5. Charge battery

A cold battery charges very slowly. Therefore, if the battery has become cold, it is better to charge it indoors and at room temperature. In that case, let the battery warm up first to prevent condensation. Condensation negatively affects the charging cycle and, in the worst case, can cause damage to the battery.

It is therefore only permitted to charge the Pendix battery at a temperature between 10 and 45 C, as described on the instruction label on the battery.

6. Battery protection covers

With our neoprene protective covers for Pendix batteries, cooling is slowed down and also prevents overheating. Ask our customer service about this.

About our regular bikes / What bike suits me?

Answer

The Roetz Originals collection consists of two models: the Road and the Vigour.

The Road is the modern, stylish variant of the classic city bike. The bike kicks rather light and you sit comfortably upright due to the high and spacious handlebar. The chain guard has the same colour as the frame. The black and white tyres contain a reflection stripe. The robust Road is very suitable for placing a child seat and for light transport!

The Vigour has a sporty appearance with the looks of a vintage bike. It has a slightly heavier resistance than the Road and the handlebar is placed more to the fore. As you bend over somewhat, it's easier to ride fast speed, a bit similar to a racing bike. Other features are the narrow saddle, the aluminum chain protector and the cream-coloured, thick tyres with reflection stripe. The Vigour has a luxurious finish and is an elegant and cool Roetz!

Answer

We offer two frame sizes: Size 1 and Size 2. In our configurator you can choose the size that fits best to your height. If you have doubts between the two sizes, we recommend you to opt for the larger size.
